I am not one to tell you not to change your hair color. I have been changing mine for as long as I can remember and probably won't stop changing it until it falls out! I do not necessarily follow these rules because I am daring and like all different kinds of hair styles and colors. I have also been told I look good with all the hair colors I have tried from jet black to white blond, thus making it more complicated to follow these rules. On the other hand, one day I will probably tame down changing my hair all the time so these are rules I need to study!
Rule #1: Stay Within Your Natural Color Range
When going lighter staying within 3 or 4 shades of your natural hair color will give you enough of a change for a complete make over, but still compliment your facial features just the same. For fair hair going darker any color too far away from your natural color will look odd.
Some Pointers!
When going blond, people with light brown to mid brown hair will look wonderful with blond highlights. Redheads can also go blond, and look great but must use caution as blond hair can look harsh against their natural skin tone.
When going darker, don't go too dark. Light to mid brown tones hair will blend well with ash and golden brown tones. If you have naturally dark hair and don't want too drastic a change, splice your hair with rich browns and burgundy colors for a new look!
Headed Red! Natural Blonds should try a pale chestnut tone and light to dark brown shades should add auburn and chestnut. Black hair will be complimented well with mahogany highlights.
Rules #2: Matching With Your Skin Tone
If you naturally have dark or olive skin, try to stay with darker hair colors. Yellow skin tones will look good with rich colors such as deep auburn. Pale skin will match nearly any color. Pinkish skin is great with neutral tones such as beige blond and chocolate brown, but can look too pink with shades of red and gold.
Another easy way to know if a color will suit you is to match your eyes to your skin tone. Pale skin and blue eyes will naturally suit blonde and lighter tones. Medium skin tones and hazel eyes look great with dark blondes and copper colors. Darker skin with any eye color is perfect for shades of purple and mahogany.
