Days 16-19: Poster Board

Today and for the next few days, I am going to be working on a poster. This poster will be my first project in this Independent Study and I am excited to get it started! I am going to put everything about the basics of cosmetology on the board. There will be a picture up loaded onto this site when it is all finished.

For the next several days I will be working on this poster and what exactly I want to be included in my information. I think I would like to start with what exactly cosmetology is, then explain the schooling that must be happen to obtain a cosmetology license. I would also like to include a few simple hair styles that I have researched before. For example; the curly, wavy and straight looks.

Day 15: Conditioning Treatment

A conditioning treatment can heal damaged hair in a few treatments! Just follow these steps and you are on your way to healthier looking hair.

Conditioning Treatment Steps

  1. Shampoo hair as you would any other day
  2. With your hair still wet, apply conditioner. Any type of conditioner will work, there are special conditioners for deep healing that can be used also.
  3. Wet a small hand towel and put it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes
  4. After the towel is hot flip your hair upside down and wrap the towel around your hair as if it was a regular towel after the shower
  5. Use an alligator clip to hold the towel in place
  6. Wait until the towel is totally cooled down and rinse the hair
  7. You could always repeat steps 3-5 for deeper conditioning
  8. Hair will look best if it is towel dried rather than blow dried
Do this one to two times a week and look forward to beautiful locks in just weeks!

Day 14: How To Control Oily or Dry Hair

Different people have different hair, so they needed to be treated differently! Oily and Dry hair needed to be approached differently in order to be at its best. These are way to take care of your hair the way it needs to be taken care of.

Oily Hair Treatments:
  • Start by shampooing your hair daily, with a special formulated shampoo for oily hair
  • If your hair is especially oily you can shampoo twice a day
  • Avoid using conditioner at all. If you feel it is necessary use a small amount and apply only to the ends of the hair
  • When brushing your hair avoid  rubbing the brush or comb against the scalp, it can loosen the oil and transfer it through your hair
Dry Hair Treatments:
  • Start getting rid of dry hair and adding moister by only shampooing every other day
  • Purchase a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated for dry hair
  • Also a conditioning treatment could be useful (I will explain how to do a conditioning treatment in another post)
  • Letting your hair air dry or towel drying it can keep it from becoming dried out aswell
  • Avoiding heat elements can help too. No straightening or curly the hair for a few days or not everyday can restore moister
Good luck on your way to beautiful hair! :)

Day 13: Hair Tips (Curly, Straight, Wavy)

There are so many different types of hair; short, long, thick and thin! Curly, straight, and wavy. Oily, dry and possibly porous! There are different ways to handle all these types of hair, and ethnic hair is a whole other story! Today I am going to find ways to tame and make beautiful the Curly, Straight or Wavy types!

Wavy Hair Tips:
  • Work dry shampoo through hair, this will give volume and soak up any greasiness
  • Add a little texture balm, less is more. Too much of this will weigh the style down
  • Flip your hair upside-down and scrunch it using a spritz of spray gel

Curly Hair Tips:
If you have naturally curly hair, it will look best shoulder length or longer. Adding a few layers about an inch or so shorter than regular length will make the style not look so bottom heavy, dispersing the curls through the whole hair. Do not make layers too short or it will make the style look poufy instead of lay naturally with perfect length and coiled curls.

Layer Up

Straight Hair Tips:
Straight hair can be extremely stubborn and not want to work with you.
To add more volume, blow-dry hair with a round boar's hair bristled brush, This brush is round and by using it will give tons of volume and the soft bristles can make hair shinier. Volume can also be added to hair by teasing the underneath of top layers and adding hair spray for the all day hold. Another tip can be to use special volumizing and thickening shampoo and conditioner that gives the right amount of moister without weight your 'do down.

Day 12: Text Book

Today I am going to look at various websites to try and find a text book I can use for further and more accurate research. I am going to search amazon, e-bay and craigslist. I am looking for a cheap text book used in cosmetology school. Weather then book is totally up to date or not to me it does not matter, either way it is important to know the things offered in these books. Hopefully the book I purchase will have detailed instructions and possibly practice tests that I can use to study and make sure I really know the information.

Day 10: Two Rules for Success

I am not one to tell you not to change your hair color. I have been changing mine for as long as I can remember and probably won't stop changing it until it falls out! I do not necessarily follow these rules because I am daring and like all different kinds of hair styles and colors. I have also been told I look good with all the hair colors I have tried from jet black to white blond, thus making it more complicated to follow these rules. On the other hand, one day I will probably tame down changing my hair all the time so these are rules I need to study!

Rule #1: Stay Within Your Natural Color Range
When going lighter staying within 3 or 4 shades of your natural hair color will give you enough of a change for a complete make over, but still compliment your facial features just the same. For fair hair going darker any color too far away from your natural color will look odd.
Some Pointers!
When going blond, people with light brown to mid brown hair will look wonderful with blond highlights. Redheads can also go blond, and look great but must use caution as blond hair can look harsh against their natural skin tone.
When going darker, don't go too dark. Light to mid brown tones hair will blend well with ash and golden brown tones. If you have naturally dark hair and don't want too drastic a change, splice your hair with rich browns and burgundy colors for a new look!
Headed Red! Natural Blonds should try a pale chestnut tone and light to dark brown shades should add auburn and chestnut. Black hair will be complimented well with mahogany highlights.

Rules #2: Matching With Your Skin Tone
If you naturally have dark or olive skin, try to stay with darker hair colors. Yellow skin tones will look good with rich colors such as deep auburn. Pale skin will match nearly any color. Pinkish skin is great with neutral tones such as beige blond and chocolate brown, but can look too pink with shades of red and gold.
Another easy way to know if a color will suit you is to match your eyes to your skin tone. Pale skin and blue eyes will naturally suit blonde and lighter tones. Medium skin tones and hazel eyes look great with dark blondes and copper colors. Darker skin with any eye color is perfect for shades of purple and mahogany.

Day 9: Skin Tone

There are a variety of complexions, but all of them fall into two different skin tone categories- warm or cool. There is a great importance to knowing your skin tone and what colors look good on you. In the fashion world, skin tone is important in hair color, make-up, accessories and clothing.

Warm Skin Tones:
A yellow or golden skin undertone is a warm skin tones. Hair colors that have a warm overtone will generally look natural on this person.

Cool Skin Tones:
Pink or blue skin undertones fall are cool skin tones. Meaning hair colors that ave a cool overtone will generally look much more natural.

Finding Skin Tone Category:
The simplest way to figure out your skin tone is to look at the veins in your arm while in natural sunlight. If the color looks green you are a warm skin tones, if the color looks blue you are a cool skin tone.

Examples:

An Example of a warm skin tone, with a warm hair color looks natural.

Day 8: Facial Shapes

Hair styles are predominately about shape and geometry. The wrong hair style match with the wrong facial shapes can cause a disaster. It is all about matching the hairstyle to the facial shape to define the shape and pull out the strong features. There are many different face shapes:

Oval Face Shape:
  • The forehead and jaw are the same width
  • Curvilinear shape
  • The length i s equal to one and a half times the width
Round Face Shape:
  • Circular shaped
  • Length is approximately equal to width
Square Face Shape:
  • Strong and broad forehead
  • Angular jaw
Heart Face Shape:
  • Wide at the forehead and cheekbones
  • Narrow at the jawline
Triangular Face Shape:
  • Forehead and cheekbones are narrow
  • Jawline is wide
Diamond Face Shape:
  • Forehead and jawline are narrow
  • Cheekbones are wide and high
Oblong Face Shape:
  • Face is longer than it is wide
  • Long, Straight cheek line

Day 7: The Color Wheel

The color wheel is used for more than just art you know? I supposed you could say coloring hair is an art? The color wheel is used to determine which colors to mix to make a neutral color. For example, If you are trying to get blond hair, and it is yellow, adding purple will make the yellow cancel out and the hair be blond. The two colors will make a neutral color such as a brown or blond. The colors across from each other on the color wheel is how you know which to mix to make your neutral.

     Basics of the color wheel:
Primary colors; Red, Blue and Yellow.
Secondary colors;   Orange,  Green and Violet.
A Tertiary color is created by mixing a primary and a secondary color.  For Example, Yellow-Orange is created by mixing Yellow and Orange.
Complimentary colors work great for  trying to tone down unwanted tones and enhance wanted tones. For example, If you are trying to tone down the warmth that occurs in a color use a cool tone(green based).
Hot Colors: Think of colors of the sun, Red, Orange, and Yellow
Warm Colors: A color that contains one hot color becomes a warm colors. Example: Purple Red
Cold Colors: Think of snowy days, Green, Blue and Violet
Cool Colors: A color that contains one cold color becomes a cool color. Example: Blue Green
