Day 90: Presentation

Today I will be presenting my final presentation to my 12 o'clock biology class and in front of my mentor, my step mother and my advisor and her colleagues. We will see how the presentation goes.

Day 72- 89

I have completed my final presentation. Sadly, the video quality is very poor because my video camera would not work with my computer so I had to use my Web Cam, which is not the best. Never the less, the video is complete!

Day 71: Video Contents

I have decided what my video will contain, 5 quick and cute hair styles. The hair bow, the messy bun, the twisty braid, the twisted bun and a rockabilly bandana style! I will make a video using Windows Movie Maker, because I am quite familiar with the cite. I will hopefully be able to find a way to upload this video into a blog post.

Day 53: Final Presentation

The end of the year is approaching and I am now going to begin deciding how I want to do my presentation for this independent study. I need to present in front of a few people, my advisor and two other community members. I can invite students or other teachers to my presentation. What I need to do between now and then is start making posters, to place around the school as advertising. Talking my advisor, and find a  time they can attend. Invite the other community members so that they can judge my final presentation. I also need to spend some time looking at what I want to present. At the beginning of the semester I wanted to present a few quick cute hair styles, I was thinking about ten of them. Now I need to get to practicing, find a model and deciding the final hairstyles I would like to present.
I may get together with my mother or step mom and talk to them about any suggestions on what I should present to the class.

Day 52: Color Correction

Sometimes when someone is coloring your hair it doesn't turn out the way you want it. That could be for any number of things, sometimes because they colorist mixed the colors incorrectly. Other times because the hair dye is old or the wrong color was used! Sadly, this happens a lot of the time, but can be fixed if done properly! The term used for fixing a wrong hair color is Color Correction.
The color is corrected in different ways depending on the color the hair is, and the color you want the hair to be. This takes some people years and years of schooling and practice to master. There are even people that only do work in the line of color corrections, because they have learned to master it so well.

Since I can not study this all on my own, I will not be going in too deep learning about this for now. I am going to wait until Cosmetology school, when a professional can teach me how you go about fixing a color properly, so that I do not get any wrong ideas in my head.

Day 50: Wedding Hair Styles

Every woman looks forward to her big day, where she walks down the aisle to the person they love, to spend the rest of their days together. She will be in the perfect dress, walking by her favorite flowers, everything about the day is just perfect, including her hair. A beautiful dress is great, unless you don't have the hair to match it! Woman plan their wedding days for months, sometimes years, and the hair is a big deal. Here are some ideas for a picture perfect wedding do.

The prom prep for hair applies to wedding hair as well, May also include a hair cut.

Day 49: Prom Day Prep

There are many things a girl needs to do before her prom day, a lot of prep work goes into that one night. Here are the things she needs to do for her locks, keeping them perfect.

  • If curling your hair, at all, curl stays better in dirty hair, which sadly means that you must not wash your hair for a few days before curling it.
  • Make sure you use a heat protecting product when styling your hair for that day.
  • Throughout the day more hair spray may need to be added, to insure nothing to come out of place.
  • When you wash your hair out, don't try to brush through it first. Just take the bobby pins and rubber bands and accessories out, then shampoo and condition like normal. With all the hair spray you will most likely have on your hair, brushing it out will cause A LOT of breakage.
  • I suggest using a conditioning treatment the last time before doing your hair, and right after you take your hair out. All the tangles and such can cause a lot of damage, especially to dyed or bleached hair.
  • If you need to dye your hair for the prom, make sure you do it a week or so before, dying your hair does damage it, but you don't want to do it too soon in advance or it will fade, or possibly show your roots

Day 48: Prom Hair

Since it is around Prom time, I decided to take a look at many different hair styles that are worn during the prom season!

Day 47: Bleached Hair Tips

Bleached hair can have a lot of issues, bleaching literally rips the pigment out of your hair, leaving it damaged. There are several  things you need to do to help save your blonde hair from breaking off and looking stringy.

Tips to Keeping Golden Locks:

  • Use heat tools as minimal as possible, and when they are used also apply a thermal protecting product
  • Always use  a wide toothed comb to minimize breakage
  • Washing your hair dries it out, so wash as little as possible
  • Once a week use a conditioning treatment on your hair or use a strong shampoo and conditioner specialized for dry damaged hair
  • To keep the hair from turning slightly yellow, buy a purple shampoo, this will keep the hair as light as possible
  • Avoid well water and chlorine pools, the well water will turn your hair an orange rusty color over time, and the chlorine with tint it green
  • If your natural hair color is much different than a blonde, get your roots touched up often to avoid dark roots

Day 46: Red Hair Secrets

Red Hair is very popular these days, but not at all easy to maintain.Red hair comes with many secrets and tricks to maintain the color and avoid it fading to an unwanted orange or copper color. These tips can be used on any shade of red hair from bright fire red to a deep cherry red.

Tips:

  • Wash hair with cold water, the warm water will drain the color out
  • purchase a special shampoo and conditioner, either for red hair or just for colored hair
  • Stay away from heat products, it can fade the color faster. If it is necessary to use heat tools on your hair use a thermal protecting product
  • Shampoo is your new enemy, shampoo can easily strip color so shampoo less, and condition more!
  • The water supply you have can also aid the fading process, stay away from chlorine additives in your showers by purchasing a special shower head
  • Stay away from swimming pools (chlorine)

Day 45: Kool Aid Hair Dye

Did you know that the delicious drink can also double as a temporary hair dye on light hair? There are several different methods to dying your hair with kool-aid, here are a few.

  • Make sure you use unsweetened hair dye, make sure you have enough for your length and thickness of hair.
  • Boil enough water to completely soak the part of your hair you want to dye, the water must be very hot so dont dye too close to your scalp. This is why many people have their hair tipped with the koolaid color.
  • Dissolve the kool-aid into the water, dip the parts of your hair you want dyed into the hot water. CAUTION, IT IS VERY HOT!
  • Leave our hair soaking in the colored water for about 5 minutes then let your hair dry naturally to make sure it absorbs all the color.
  • Rinse and shampoo and condition the hair to get the extra color out.
  • This will last up to a week, fading each day.
Another way is the following:

  • Use a package of kool-aid in the color you want and add conditioner and mix it until it is a creamy paste like state.
  • Place the conditioner in a bowl and put in the microwave for a minute to dissolve the koolaid faster.
  • Place on your hair where desired, the longer you leave the color the darker it will be.
  • Rinse the hair with water only and style as usual.

Day 44: High Lights/ Low Lights

High Lights and Low Lights are an great way to spice up the same hair style. It adds more color and more dimension to your style! High Lights, are specifically streaks placed throughout the hair, thick or thin, of a lighter color then your base color.
Low Lights- are the same just of a darker color then your base color.
The most common are high lights of blonde on a darker hair color. Below are some pictures just to show what I am talking about.

Day 43: How to Hold Color

Hair color tends to fade quickly, some will last longer than others, some just washes out after a few days. Different colors fade faster, for example, red hair dye will fade away much quicker than a brown. A blonde hair dye will not fade because its pigment is being ripped away, instead of being laid on top.
Here are some tips on how to hold your hair dye longer!

  • Do not wash your hair at least one day before coloring, surprisingly, this holds the hair color in better
  • Use color enhancing shampoos and conditioners, there are some that are even specific to your hair color.
  • If you have lighter hair, such as a blonde, avoid the swimming pools, the chlorine can turn your hair a shade of green. That green is not easy to get out either!
  • After dying your hair you should wait 24-48 hours before shampooing it again, it will give the color a chance to set into your hair throughly.
  • Luke warm to cold water is the ideal temperature you want to wash your colored hair in, it will hold the color much longer. Finishing with rinsing your hair in cold water helps seal the cuticles of your hair. This is especially important with red hair color!
  • Only shampoo when needed, the more you wash it the faster it will come out.
  • Any heat sources such as, curling iron, flat iron and a blow dryer can cause hair to fade quicker. Avoid using these appliances as much as possible

Day 41: Interview

I interviewed my step mother, Madonna Royer. She has been a cosmetologist for year and currently has her own salon in Muncie, Indiana, Dimensions Salon. The following are the questions I asked her and below are her answers. These questions are specifically based on cutting hair and her experiences and opinons.

How long did you attend cosmetology school? And where?
Roffler's Academy in Pensacola Florida, for 1500 hours

What is your favorite part of being a cosmetologist?
Corrective Color

What is the easiest, and hardest, hair cut to give?
Easiest- Blunt cut, no layers
Hardest- A stacked angled bob, because the lines must all blend perfectly in the back or every line shows and looks bad

What is your favorite hair cut to give?
A piecey cut around the face with layers

Is it easier or harder to cut a mans hair?
Much easier

Do you have any advise about being a cosmetologist?
Learn how to communicate with the client, and do not discuss religion or politics.

Day 36-41: Power Point

Until Spring Break I will be working on a power point about cutting hair specifically. This will contain the information I have already have researched and additional information about cutting hair. This will also contain the answers to my interview questions, Which I will also be posting in a blog post soon.

Day 35: Checking for Lice

Checking for lice is a very important thing that needs to be done before every hair cut or color given. If the client does have lice it is then illegal to give that person any services. Checking for lice can be done in a discrete manner, and does not need to be announced. These are easy ways to check for lice.

  • Have a comb handy and part the hair down the center of the head
  • Then part the hair at the bottom
  • Then part the hair at the crown across the top of the head
  • When the hair is parted in each hair then check the roots of the hair for any lice, if you see none, move to the next parting
Warnings that someone may have lice:
  • itchy head
  • quickly developing oily roots
  • appearances of dandruff-like white flakes in the hair
  • if someone they know and is close to has lice, it is possible for them to get it too.

Day 34: Interview Questions

In the next few days I will be interviewing a professional cosmetologist about cutting hair. Here I will simulate my questions for the interview. These will be general questions about the profession and then questions specified for cutting hair.

  1. How long did you attend Cosmetology School and where did you attend?
  2. What is your favorite part about being a cosmetologist?
  3. What is the easiest, and hardest, hair cut to give?
  4. What is your favorite hair cut to give?
  5. Is it easier or harder to give a man's haircut compared to a women's?
  6. Do you have any advise for becoming a cosmetologist?

Day 33: DreadLocks

Dread locks are an interesting look in which some people do not find attractive or sanitary. And then some believe it is cool and different, it all depends on the person. My older brother has had dreadlocks since he was in high school and I find them to be neat, so I decided to research them and figure out how they get started, since I have always been curious.

To start dread locks you will need...

  • Dread Wax
  • Dreadlocks Shampoo
  • Rubber Bands
Facts About DreadLocks:
  • Hair needs to be at least 3 inches or longer
  • To start the dreadlocks you first part the hair into somewhat small sections and just twist each part until it becomes a dread lock
  • The twisting method makes dreadlocks somewhat permanent, meaning to get rid of them it will take a lot of work, or a hair cut.
  • There are temporary dreadlocks also, this will involve just a strong hair gel and a lot of twisting and will come out after a day or two. Just needs washed out
These are temporary dread locks, the girl just twisted her hair with gel until her hair looked like this
Permanent Dreadlocks These dread locks are permanent and will take a lot of work to get out. As the hair grows she just twists the roots until they fit together normally. This took special sectioning, no gel and twisting for days until it held together.

Day 32: How to Give a Buzzcut

The most common hair cut for men, especially in the summer time, is a short buzzcut. Something they don't have to take care of, something that won't keep them hot. This is what most men want in the summer.

Items Needed:

  • Mirror
  • Comb
  • Hair clippers
  • Blade Guard
  • Cape
  • Standard Hair Cutting Scissors

It is a simple hair cut to give, just follow these steps:

  1. If the hair is long, first comb out the tangles
  2. Attach the shortest length blade guard for a close to the scalp cut, make sure it and the blades are clean and free from hair
  3. Start by cutting above one ear, starting at the hair line
  4. Glide the blade guard gently against the persons scalp until you reach the back of the neck
  5. Return to the front of the head and repeat just beside the already buzzed area
  6. Be sure to have the blade guard slightly overlap the buzzed area in order to ensure all hair is cut
  7. Continue working your way up the clients head until you reach the top middle of the head. When you get to this point, move over to the other ear(with the unshaven hair) and begin just as you did on the opposite side. Work all the way back to the center, until all the hair is gone
  8. Make sure to trim neck hairs and side burns, this is easy if the blade guard is removed and you use the very tip to cut the hair, this should not hurt the client in any way.
Final Result should look similar to this:

Day 31: Hair Styles for Boys

On this blog I have mostly been talking about and researching female hair cuts and color. I decided I would take a few days to explore the hair cuts of men. Men can style their hair in many ways but sometimes they chose not to! Here are some different ways men can style their hair.

Day 30: Bangs

Bangs are a statement, a very noticeable part of your hair style. There are many different looks for different faces, and sometimes it is hard to pick the one made just for you. Below will be picture of the different bangs, maybe one will be just right for you.
Baby doll bangs, short short bangs that expose most of the forehead.
Straight across bangs, a blunt straight across look.
Whispy straight across bangs, just a twist on straight blunt bangs. Not as full and more piecey.
Side swoop bangs. Works best with an off center part bangs swoop to one side

Long side swoop bangs, cover one eye. Best with an off center part.

Full Bangs, Cover all or most of the forehead and are more in between a side swept bang and a straight across one.
No bangs, for some it looks best to have no bangs, just straight hair with either an off center part or a center part.
